Why (pop)cultured?
My journey to becoming another person with a Substack
Hey there, hello.
Maybe you know me personally. Perhaps you just follow me on Instagram or TikTok. Or maybe you stumbled across me some other way.
Hi *waves*
Before we get started, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.
I’m Monique, but most people call me Mon. Except my family, they don’t and never have.
The main thing you need to know about me is I love to write. I’ve built my entire life around it. I studied journalism, I’ve spent more than 12 years working as a communications specialist, and I am actively trying to get my Young Adult (YA) novels published. I have one completed manuscript, and I’m currently writing two others. I have a Google doc filled with ideas for more.
So far I’ve received a steady stream of rejection which has left me feeling like this:
The second thing you need to know about me is my deep love of pop culture. I’ve never been quite sure where it’s come from. My dad is a classical musician who exclusively listens to ABC Classic FM on the radio and much prefers to consume television and movies from European countries.
I wasn’t raised to love pop culture the way I do. But I do. Oh, I do.
I could write forever about it, and the things I love, so rather than keeping my ramblings contained to Instagram and TikTok, I thought it was time I started a Substack so you can get a little (or long) Mon-coded rant straight to your inbox.
Will I just be writing about pop culture?
The short answer is no.
The long answer is I will mostly be writing about pop culture, but it won’t be the only thing I share here.
As a writer, I want to share some of my writing.
It might be poetry, short stories, or snippets from something I’m currently working on.
I will predominantly be sharing my observations around pop culture though.
So if that’s your kind of thing, I’d love it if you’d subscribe.
It’s free and I don’t have any plans to monetise this.
Thanks for sticking around!
